Vitor Abreu received his B.S. and M.S. degrees at the Federal University of
Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and his Ph.D. degree at Rice
University (Houston, Texas). His Ph.D. work had a strong impact in the SEPM
60 Special Publication, where he documented possible global links for
sequence stratigraphic surfaces in the Cenozoic and Upper Cretaceous. He
has published more than 50 papers and abstracts on subjects ranging from
sequence stratigraphy, paleoceanography, evolution of passive margins, and
deep water reservoirs.
He worked for Petrobras from 1987 to 1997 and for Unocal from 1998 to 2000.
Vitor has been working for ExxonMobil since 2000, starting at the Upstream
Research Company (former Exxon Production Research, EPR), and currently
working at the Exploration Company as Advisor in Stratigraphy. His work in
ExxonMobil span from reservoir characterization of deep water systems in
the Gulf of Mexico and West Africa, developing research projects including
deep water outcrops in North America and Europe, and regional stratigraphic
projects in several sedimentary basins around the world.
Vitor has been an Adjunct Professor at Rice University since 1999, where he
took responsibility for the course on Sequence Stratigraphy after Peter
Vail's retirement. Vitor is also Adjunct Professor at the University of
Houston.
Vitor has been a diligent member of SEPM, organizing technical sessions and
teaching short courses in the AAPG/SEPM annual meetings, and actively
participating in both Deepwater and Sequence Stratigraphy SEPM Research
Groups. He is currently the Councilor for Research Activities of SEPM, and
he was also SEPM Technical Co-Chair for Sequence Stratigraphy in the 2002
AAPG/SEPM Annual Meeting in Houston. Vitor was the recipient of the Jules
Braunstein Memorial Award (best poster presentation - 2002 AAPG Annual
Meeting).
