About Us

The mission of the Arboretum is:

• To create a teaching and research collection of woody plants that will serve students, faculty, and staff by enhancing the campus as a place for study,  learning about plants, appreciation of the natural world, relaxation, and enjoyment.
• To promote environmental literacy by enhancing the campus as a living laboratory of attractive, diverse plantings that engage and inform campus residents and visitors.

The Arboretum features native Texas trees and shrubs, but also seeks to enhance diversity by incorporating other species as appropriate to teaching and research needs.

The Arboretum was named in honor of Lynn Lowrey (1917-1997) (Biography of Lynn Lowrey), a well known Houston horticulturist and collector who has been described as the founder of the native plant movement in Texas. Mr. Lowrey believed that Houston, due to its location, soil types, and climate is the land of opportunity for gardeners. Indeed, Lowrey's mark on the landscape of Houston is readily apparent now, nearly 50 years after his arrival. Lowery was best noted for the use of native Mexican and Texas plants in his landscapes.

History of the Lowrey Arboretum

The Lowrey Arboretum is a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.
