Rice University/HAM-TMC Library Remote Access to Electronic Resources Policy

Electronic resources provided through both libraries are controlled by licensing agreements with publishers and third party vendors. These licenses define how, and by whom, the resource may be accessed and used.

The cooperative arrangement between HAM-TMC Library and Fondren Library does not extend to permitting remote access to online resources. Each library does have open access to most of their online resources at publicly accessible workstations in each library.

Individuals with joint appointments (i.e. both to Rice University and another Texas Medical Center academic institution) do have remote access to both libraries' resources.

1.  To get access to Rice University materials:

  • Rice faculty appointees all qualify for an account on the Rice UNIX facility - or ruf - network.  Go to http://apply.rice.edu to apply for your account (usually created within 2-3 working days) and to confirm availability
  • Configure your browser for the Rice University proxy, following the instructions found at http://proxy.rice.edu (be sure to note and follow any instructions regarding patches or upgrades relating to your browser type and version).  When you click on a Fondren Library electronic journal or database link that requires user verification, you will be prompted for your RUF username and password.
  • In addition, please note that many of Fondren Library's resources generate new browser windows in the course of their operation - we strongly recommend disabling pop-up blocking software when using library resources.  If you are experiencing difficulty using the proxy for remote access, send a message to helpdesk@rice.edu including the specific details (resource attempted, error message received, browser type and version, internet service provider, date and approximate time).

2. To get access to HAM-TMC Library materials:

  • Obtain a HAM-TMC Library card.  Instructions and application form are available online at http://resource.library.tmc.edu/circ/cards.php
  • Obtain an email account from the medical or dental school with which you are affiliated (e.g. Baylor College of Medicine or University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston)
  • Apply for TMC Educational Remote Access referencing your TMC educational institution email account and HAM-TMC Library card number
  • Once your registration has been processed, the HAM-TMC Library will send you a remote-access username and password.  (This may take up to two business days from the receipt of your registration.)
  • When you begin using the remote-access service you will not need to configure your Web browser or log in prior to accessing the HAM-TMC Library's website.  When you click on a HAM-TMC Library electronic journal article or database that requires user verification, you will be prompted for your remote access username and password.  If you are experiencing difficulty using the remote access service, send a message to hiec@library.tmc.edu including the specific details (resource attempted, error message, browser type and version, internet service provider, date and approximate time).
