Dr. Jason Sosa Ph.D.
(Ph.D. Texas A&M University)
Lecturer

Jason Sosa is a Lecturer within the Kinesiology Department at Rice University.  He earned his PhD at Texas A&M University within the Sport Management program.  His research areas are in Latin Studies in sport, and human resources organizational behavior.  More specifically, he studies the influence of diversity within sport at the individual and group level.

His research focuses on the influence of Latin baseball players within MLB.  Currently his research agenda is focused on Latino placement within MLB and how the different components of diversity influence their success and career advancement within MLB.  Such variables that he has tested are the skin color, education, and birth place of Latin players (e.g. within the United States or foreign born).  Further, Sosa has re-tested the centrality theory, more commonly known as "stacking" theory, as it pertains to this particular ethnic group.  As a result of his work, Sosa has been a guest presenter at The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, an expert sport professional consultant for CNN and Newsweek on various social issues within professional sport, and has been invited to speak at other University Sport Management programs.

Outside of his baseball research, Sosa has focused on leadership and organizational culture outcomes within NCAA athletics.  More specifically, he has explored the effect of an athletic department's culture on student athlete success, leadership and organizational culture within Division I, II, and II, and finally the influence of organizational culture on job satisfaction of NCAA academic administrators.  Outside of the collegiate administrative level of athletics, Sosa has also explored the influence of diversity variables within the coaching profession.  He has identified differences in career aspirations within gender and ethnicity of coaches in respect to job satisfaction, turnover intentions and organizational fit within and athletic department.  These areas of research have proven valuable to those interested in social issues within collegiate athletics.

Sosa has a passion for baseball, but when he is not watching or coaching he can be found running or enjoying a round of golf.  Sosa was a collegiate athlete as well competing in the 800m for the Aggies of Texas A&M.  Although he currently does not compete at an elite level, Sosa often can be found at many local road races and "All Comers" meets.
