ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN EAST ASIA
FIELD STUDY OPPORTUNITY (SUMMER, 2005)

(See link to application and instructions at bottom of page)

By virtue of your successful completion in the Freeman Foundation-sponsored Faculty Development East Asian Institutes organized by Professor Donald Clark of Trinity University, Professor Harold Tanner of the University of North Texas or Professor Richard J. Smith of Rice University, you are eligible to apply for a three-week field study focusing on China and Korea. If you are selected, most of your travel expenses for this tour will be paid by the Freeman Foundation.

The time of the field study will probably be from early June to late June of 2005 (the exact dates have not yet been fixed). Two weeks will be spent in the People's Republic and one week in Korea. The leaders of the group will be specialists in East Asia from one or more of the above named universities. The total cost to each member of the field study (outside of discretionary spending) will be about $500.00, which the Freeman Foundation sees as a demonstration of good faith--an expression of your personal commitment to the project.

Here is how we will proceed:  Each of the eligible teachers wanting to go will be asked to fill out the attached one-page application. There are special instructions and other documents needed, as seen in the instructions below. A total of  22 teachers (and two alternates) will be chosen from the applicant pool by a panel of East Asian area specialists and experts in curriculum development from Texas, Oklahoma and New York.  Here are the basic requirements, in addition to your completed one-page "Application" form:

--A typed resume describing your professional training and experience. This document should list your educational background, your current academic position and teaching responsibilities (classes currently taught), your achievements as a teacher, any foreign travel, etc.

--A 1-2 page typed description of a major project you will pursue upon your return. You should indicate concretely how this project would benefit your students and your school (and ideally your community). Outline the research you will undertake in China and Koea to support your individual project. Also explain how you plan to deliver the content of this project to your students and others (e.g. a web page, handbook, culture box, series of thematically-related activities, etc.) Your plan should be as specific and as creative as possible, and should include a time frame for implementation. Projects that have long-term effects will be viewed with particular favor.

--Two or three typed paragraphs that answer the following questions: (1) What experiences have you had that would strengthen your application for this study tour? Include, if possible, evidence that you are a good sport and a team player. (2) How will your experiences on this tour contribute to your effectiveness as a teacher?

--A typed letter from your dean of instruction, principal or superintendent explaining the significance to the school of your participation in the East Asia Field Study.
