abstract DNA sequencing is a cornerstone of modern biology. The latest in sequencing instrumentation is Pacific Biosciences’ Single-Molecule, Real-Time (SMRT™) sequencer, which features the integration of several cutting-edge approaches to the biology, chemistry, and optics needed to observe biological processes in real-time. The first part of the talk is an overview of how the various technologies fit together to achieve sequencing. The second will be a tour of selected software modules of the system, and how we solved various problems with interdisciplinary approaches.

speaker bio Mark Maxham is the manager of the instrument software group at Pacific Biosciences. He has taken a circuitous path through Silicon Valley, working as an engineer in various fields including optical networking, multiplayer games, spam filtering, media streaming, personal storage, and virtual reality. He received his BACS, BSEE, and MSEE degrees from Rice University in 1990 and 1994. At Rice he was Chief Justice and Fellow at Wiess College, and the lead engineer on the 3rd incarnation of the War Pig (the one that flew).
