Lisa Bassett Johnston has experience teaching first-year rhetoric and composition as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate technical communication courses. Before coming to Rice, she served as an assistant dean at Southern Methodist University where she worked closely with students, advising and speaking to groups about academic requirements.
In her writing courses, students explore communication strategies through class discussion, readings, oral presentations, collaborative projects, and peer reviewed writing assignments.
She enjoys creative writing and has published seven books for children, including a biography of Lewis Carroll that developed from her undergraduate honors thesis.
Her dissertation, “‘Forms of Things Unknown’: Fantasy Illustration in Published Texts of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 1837-1914,” investigates the ways in which illustrations for popular Victorian and Edwardian editions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream present critical and cultural assumptions in visual terms.
