In the summer of 2008, Rice University Beyond Traditional Borders and the School of Biotechnology and Health at Tecnológico de Monterrey collaboratively offered the opportunity to study the course Bioengineering and World Health to 20 Houston and Monterrey high school and college students. Over a four-week period students learned how bioengineering can make a difference in our health today, how that varies for countries with differing levels of development, and where the future of bioengineering lies. Students began the course in Mexico with two weeks of study at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, benefiting from the expertise of one of Mexico’s most prestigious technical and medical universities and from visits to marginalized communities with health needs representative of those found across the developing world. Students completed the course in Houston with two weeks of study at Rice University, whose bioengineering department is amongst the top 10 in the U.S. and is adjacent to the world’s largest medical center.
