Swaziland

Swaziland Landscape

Swaziland is a small landlocked country that shares its border with South Africa and Mozambique.  Nearly 70% of its 2 million inhabitants rely of subsistance farming to earn an income.  For the past few years, agricultural production has not been able to keep up with demand due to chronic drought and the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  In 2008, the World Food Programme (WFP) estimated that over 200,000 Swazis would be in need of food aid.

In the summer of 2007, BTB interns Tessa Elliott and Dave Dallas, worked at the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative Center of Excellence (BIPAI COE) in Mbabane, Swaziland to implement a distribution system for WFP food-aid.  They created a protocol to determine who was eligible, how much food they should receive and how often.  They also developed a recipe sheet on how to incorporate the corn-soy blend into traditional meals for a more balanced diet.  Tessa and Dave trained volunteers so the program could sustain itself after they left.
