TanzaniaTanzania, located in South Eastern Africa, has a population of over 40 million people. It is one of the poorest countries in the world, with half of the population living on less than one dollar per day. Although the government has made reforms to make healthcare accessible to everyone, there is a lack of qualified medical practitioners, medical equipment, and medicines. Currently, the average life expectancy at birth is 50 years, mainly affected by malaria and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In October of 2008, Beyond Traditional Borders travelled with the Village Life Outreach Project to provide healthcare in remote communities in Tanzania. BTB provided the Lab-in-a-Backpack, a portable hiking bag containing all the tools necessary for a complete medical diagnostic exam, including a microscope, microcentrifuge, and independent power supply. BTB Partners in TanzaniaVillage Life Outreach ProjectThe focus of Village Life Outreach is to provide health and educational improvement measures to the people of the Tarime District of Tanzania, East Africa. In these efforts, VLOP aims to not simply provide hand-outs, but rather to empower poor villagers to address the issues that affect their communities.
