Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, a country in western Africa with a population of over 6 million, has remained one of the poorest countries in the world despite being rich in mineral resources.  From 1999 to 2002, Sierra Leone suffered a brutal civil war characterized by the terrorization and abuse of civilians, including systematic amputations.  Currently, many civilians are still in need of prosthetic limbs.

In June 2009, Beyond Traditional Borders will work with the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation in  Sierra Leone to design a prosthetic foot that is inexpensive to produce, durable and appropriate for the culture and climate.
