BTB Summer Workshops

Beyond Traditional Borders at Rice University is offering a unique and stimulating opportunity to prepare Houston-area middle and high school teachers to offer an exciting new elective course in Bioengineering and World Health. Over a four-week period teachers will experience how bioengineering is making a difference in our health today, where the future of bioengineering lies, and will participate in hands-on activities to prepare them to teach a course titled Bioengineering and World Health.

The professional development experience consists of:

  • Guest lecture series with clinical and bioengineering laboratory visits. Teachers will attend lectures given by top medical experts in the fields of Hematology, Immunology, Cancer, Pathology, and Cardiology, coupled with clinical laboratory tours throughout the Texas Medical Center – including MD Anderson Cancer Center, St. Luke’s Texas Heart Institute, and Baylor College of Medicine. Teachers will also see bioengineering research in action at the Bioengineering labs at Rice University.

  • Assessing course-specific teaching materials. Teachers will participate in hands-on exercises to learn strategies to effectively teach Bioengineering and World Health.

  • Carrying-out an independent project. Students in Bioengineering and World Health complete an independent project in which they design a new health technology for the developing world to diagnose or treat a disease of their choice. Teachers will work to propose their own new technology prototype.
