Global Health Technolgies International Summer Internships for Undergraduates

The BTB summer internship program gives Rice University undergraduate students – both science and non-science majors – first-hand exposure to health care in resource constrained settings. The internship program serves to:

  • Improve students' understanding of the constraints (e.g. cultural, political, educational, technological, etc…) under which such care is provided
  • Inspire ideas for appropriate technological solutions to medical care issues
  • Guide the students in the development of global health technologies that respond to care constraints
In partnership with clinics, schools, and organizations working in developing countries, the internships allow students to advance in a real-world setting their solution to a Global Health Design Challenge Project developed at Rice through their Global Health Technologies Minor coursework.

Rice University Fellowships & Internships

Wagoner Foreign Study Scholarship

James T. Wagoner '29 loved to travel, and he loved Rice, so he made provisions that after his death a study-abroad scholarship for students would be established in memory of his late wife and parents.

The competition for the scholarship is open to undergraduates in their junior or senior year, recent graduates and current Rice graduate students. Foreign citizenship is no bar to eligibility. The scholarship may be held for a year, a semester, or a summer. Scholarship awards will be related to the scholar's projected expenses.

Wagoner Foreign Study Scholars are normally expected to be enrolled in a foreign university. However in exceptional circumstances where the committee agrees that it would substantially benefit the applicant, a scholarship may be used to fund foreign travel without university enrollment.

Application packets and supporting materials are due in February.

Whitaker Foundation

As the field of biomedical engineering has developed, it has expanded into a global discipline. As work in the field is becoming more refined, sometimes the best place to study or conduct research may not be domestic. At this time, there are few opportunities to go abroad and leverage international expertise. However, one of those opportunities is the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program.

The goal of the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program is to assist in the development of professional leaders who are not only superb engineers and scientists, but who also will lead and serve the profession with an international outlook.

We encourage young biomedical engineers who are keen for an international experience to take advantage of this program.

Applications must be submitted to the Whitaker Foundation for consideration in January.
