Our Statement

The Keck Center brings together computational, physical, mathematical, engineering, and biological scientists in a stimulating and nurturing environment for the development and training of a new type of scientist - one who can incorporate theory, simulation, and experiment to expand our understanding of modern biological problems. Students are provided an intellectual environment for considering problems that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and training opportunities with mentors in different disciplines.

FOUNDED: January, 1990 with a grant of $5 million from the W. M. Keck Foundation.

PURPOSE: To bring together modern biological, physical, computational, mathematical and engineering sciences to address key problems in biology and biomedicine.

FACULTY: There are over 450 current training faculty mentors or faculty affiliates from more than a dozen departments across our  six participating institutions.

EXPECTATIONS OF FACULTY:  Keck Training Faculty are members of the Keck Center and of specific training grant communities and may be asked to:

1.  Serve on the training grant steering committee

  • Review trainee applications
  • Interview and select trainees
  • Review applications and select additional training faculty not on original grant
  • Plan trainee and/or faculty retreats
  • Plan program activities

2.  Be mentors or co-mentors

  • Supervise and support trainee research
  • Participate in progress reviews and interviews
  • Participate in Friday Keck Seminars:  Speaker Selection, Attendance

3. Participate in annual Keck Annual Research Conference

  • Attendance
  • Assist with poster judging

4.  Participate in Keck Center Undergraduate Research Training Program (summer)

  • Host a lab tour

5.  Participate in training program curriculum development and teaching of specialized courses

6.   Support the grant renewal and new training grant application

7.  Support recruitment efforts

AREAS OF INTEREST: Interests cover a significant range of areas including the broad categories of Advanced Computational Methods & Tools, Biomolecular Structure and Function, Imaging and Dynamics, Mathematical Modeling of Biosystems, Medical and Genomic Informatics, Nanoscience, Pharmacoinformatics, and Biophysics.

CURRENT TRAINING PROGRAMS: The Keck Center for Interdisciplinary Bioscience Training currently supports over 70 trainees, primarily predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, through its interdisciplinary training programs. For more information about the individual programs, please see the GCC Home Page.
