Presentation of the First Frederick B. Rudolph Memorial Scholarship
December 5, 2005

At a reception on December 5, Dean Kathy Matthews presents
the first Frederick B. Rudolph Memorial Scholarship to Mithun
Mansinghani.
The Frederick B. Rudolph Memorial Scholarship was established
to "provide merit-based scholarship assistance to students from
the Cameron, Hildago, and Willacy counties with a preference for
students who attended the Science Academy of South Texas in
Mercedes, Texas."
Dr. Jennifer West, Dean Kathy Matthews, Mrs. Glenda Rudolph, and
Mithun Mansinghani
Over the years, Fred contributed a great deal of his time and talent on
behalf of the K-12 community. For over 12 years, he oversaw a program
that brought high school students from the Science Academy of South
Texas in Mercedes, Texas to Rice each summer for two weeks. This
was one of Fred’s most cherished programs. I’d like to read for you
something by Julie Browning from our Admissions Office on Fred’s legacy –
“ Fred’s work with students from the Science Academy of South Texas was
especially dear to him, and that work had a significant influence on improving
educational opportunities for hundreds of students. He went to them and
offered assistance, and then he took it a step further and brought them to
Rice for summer programs. When they showed up in our applicant pool,
prepared to take on the challenge of a Rice education, it was a highly
gratifying moment for him and our staff."
And so, today, it is my honor to announce the first recipient of the
Frederick B. Rudolph Scholarship – a graduate of the Science Academy of
South Texas – Mithun Mansinghani.
Mithun graduated Salutatorian from the Science Academy of South Texas.
He attended the Rice Summer Intern Program during the Summer of 2004.
He was accepted to Rice and is also at Martel College. Mithun is majoring
in Political Science, Policy Studies, and possibly Mechanical or Electrical
Engineering. He also plans on attending law school after undergraduate studies.
The Associated Nanotechnology Congress, October 10-11, 2005.
U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison addressed several hundred top U.S. and
British scientists at the first Associated Nanotechnology Congress Oct. 10,
a gathering of top nano experts and biomedical researchers at Rice University.
During her remarks, Hutchison expressed a desire for more Tier One
universities in Texas.
