IBB is grateful to the following 5th Annual IBB Symposium Poster Judges: Mr. Bill Gottfried, President and Founder of Gottfried International, Inc.; Dr. John Slater, HHMIPostdoctoral Fellow, Rice University; Dr. Dimitra Tsavachidou-Fenner, Postdoctoral Fellow, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; Dr. Mark Pierce, BIOE Faculty Fellow, Rice University; Dr. Stacey Kalovidouris, Executive Director of IBB.
Dr. Daniel Carson, Dean of Weiss School of Natural Sciences & Schlumberger Chair Adv. Studies and Research at Rice University, spoke first on "MUC1: A Multifunctional Cell Surface Compenent in Reproductive and Cancer Biology."
A talk on the "Role of Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans in Prostate Cancer Bone Metastases," was given by Dr. Mary "Cindy" Farach-Carson, Associate Provost of Research & Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Rice University.
Dr. Nik Putnam, Assistant Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Rice University, gave a lecture on the "Evolution of Metazoan Genome Organization."
New to Rice University, Dr. Peter Lwigale (Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology), spoke on "Eyeing the Regulatory Roles of Sema3A on Neural Crest during Ocular Development."
A lecture on "Strategies for Designing a Contractile Heart Patch for Congenital Heart Defect Repair," was given by Dr. Jeff Jacot, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at Rice University.
Jim Kretlow, one of two 2009 IBB Morse Fellows, gave a talk on "Biomaterial Strategies for Craniofacial Tissue Regeneration."
Mr. Bill Gottfried, a poster judge at the symposium, is seen here speaking with Bradley Otto, the winner of the "Best Poster by an Undergraduate Student."
The poster session consisted of 39 posters submitted by postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students from six different departments at Rice Univ.
IBB Director, Dr. Yousif Shamoo, congratulates Dr. Jean Altus for winning the "Best Poster by a Postdoctoral Fellow" Award.
The "Best Poster by a Graduate Student" Award was a tie - going to both Tomm Guu and Jennifer Saik.
Matthew Pena won "Best Poster in the Area of Biosciences."
Michael Cuchiara won the "Best Poster in the Area of Biomedicine" Award.
The dinner honored Diana Welch (former IBB Associate Director, and now Director of Operations at the BRC) for her many years of dedication with IBB. On hand to help her celebrate is Dr. Shamoo and Erica Taylor, one of IBB's 28 summer interns.
