Graduate Application: please note that this form cannot be saved; it must be completed and submitted at one time.

Mentor Recommendation Form: please note that this form cannot be saved; it must be completed and submitted at one time. Both the primary and secondary mentors must fill out this form.

For those who have recently submitted an application to one of the other Keck Center training programs, you may request that some of the same paperwork be used for an application to Computational & Structural Biology in Biodefense. Examples include your transcripts, CV, or non-mentor recommendations. Please contact Melissa Glueck at glueck@rice.edu if you wish to do this.

SUMMARY OF TRAINING GRANT APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS, ELIGIBILITY AND SUPPORT LEVELS, and REQUIRED COMMITMENTS

OVERVIEW

Fellowships are available for predoctoral trainees (U.S. citizens and/or Permanent Residents) interested in interdisciplinary training in the broad area of computational and structural biology in biodefense under the direction of participating faculty. Trainees will be required to participate in interdisciplinary research, with a primary mentor and a secondary co-mentor: one in structural, computational or chemical biology and the other in a biomedical field related to biodefense and infectious diseases. Strong emphasis will be placed on cross-training in both biodefense and infectious diseases.

It is possible to fulfill all curriculum requirements either in Galveston at UTMB, or in Houston at Baylor College of Medicine and/or UT Health Science Center at Houston.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Complete and submit the Graduate Application form.
  • Each mentor must submit an on-line Mentor Recommendation form.
  • Submit 2 Letters of Recommendation from people other than your mentors. Submit via email to glueck@rice.edu.

ELIGIBILITY AND SUPPORT LEVELS

Predoctoral Trainees: Support is available for up to two years, generally expected to be the second and third or third and fourth years of graduate school at one of the GCC member institutions. Support will include standard NIH stipends, and partial support for tuition and health insurance.

SUMMARY OF REQUIRED COMMITMENTS

1)  Graduate students are required to take a courses as described in the curriculum section of this website. It is possible to fulfill all curriculum requirements either in Galveston at UTMB, or in Houston at Baylor College of Medicine and/or UT Health Science Center at Houston.

2)  All trainees (both pre- and postdoctoral) are expected to attend a weekly seminar series and to present at specified times.

3)  All trainees are expected to attend the Keck Center annual retreat in October in the Houston area, and to present a poster or platform presentation.

4)  All trainees are expected to attend the Sealy Center Structural Biology Symposium  in May at UTMB, and to present a poster or platform presentation.

4)  All trainees are expected to submit written progress reports, including future plans, every six months. If appropriate, graduate students may submit reports required by their home institutions and append any additional material requested by the TG. Progress reports will include a mentor's evaluation and recommendations as well as the trainee's self-evaluation and plans for the next reporting period.

5)   All trainees are required to take approved training in ethics as mandated for all NIH funded trainees. In most cases, this will be done at the trainee's home institution using established courses/training sessions.

The Keck Center is also committed to providing a wide range of career development opportunities to its trainees. In some cases, opportunities are developed and provided via the Center, but Center staff also informs trainees about opportunities at all six GCC institutions that are available to them. Trainees will be invited to participate in appropriate outreach, summer undergraduate training activities, and professional and social events from time to time. Trainees are also expected to provide ongoing evaluation to the PI, and to submit a more extensive evaluation when they complete the program.
