NLM Training Program in Biomedical Informatics

Now accepting applications for predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows.

Applicants must be US citizens or Permanent Residents currently enrolled or affiliated with a GCC member institution.  Please see below for additional requirements.

Applications are due Monday, December 7,  2009 before midnight. ALL materials and recommendations must be received by that time.

Interviews for finalists will be held in early December. Mentors are expected to participate in the interview with the trainees.

Application Information & Forms

NLM Training Program Fellowship Application

  • this application form cannot be saved; it must be completed and submitted at one time

  • you should include a curriculum plan as part of your mentoring plan (see curriculum requirements for more information)

  • your mentoring plan can be identical to that used in the mentor recommendation forms of your primary and secondary mentor

  • do not use any Greek letters; write out the name (e.g. alpha, beta), as the system turns Greek text into an unreadable symbol

  • keep a separate copy of the text portion of your application; you will not receive a final copy after submission, and a printout will not show all of the text in the text fields

NLM Training Program Mentor Recommendation Form

  • both the primary and secondary mentors must fill out this form; they may use the identical mentoring plan as the applicant

  • this form cannot be saved; it must be completed and submitted at one time

  • keep a separate copy of the text portion of your recommendation; you will not receive a final copy after submission, and a printout may not show all of the text in the text fields

  • do not use any Greek letters; write out the name (e.g. alpha, beta), as the system turns Greek text into an unreadable symbol

  • the secondary mentor does not need to complete the financial and departmental contact information at the bottom; just type something meaningless into this required field

  • both mentors must be members of the NLM Training Faculty

  • membership in the Keck Center does not automatically make one a member of the AHRQ training faculty; you must apply for membership (See FAQs for the process)

OVERVIEW

Fellowships are available for U.S. citizen and Permanent Resident predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees broadly interested in the field of biomedical informatics. Applicants must be in possession of their PhD when they apply for a postdoctoral fellowship. Primary mentors must be tenured faculty; secondary mentors may be tenure track (assistant professors) or tenured.

All NLM Training Program research takes place in Houston by trainees who are enrolled at or hold an appointment at either Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, University of Houston,  UT Health Science Center - Houston, UT Medical Branch - Galveston, or UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. There are no off-site appointments to this program and this program does not grant degrees. If you are not already enrolled or appointed at one of the previously listed schools, please do not send an application form without first contacting the Keck Center and / or potential mentors at one of the six institutions.

Applicants for the predoctoral training programs must be accepted or applying to an existing departmental or inter-departmental degree-granting program at one of the six supporting GCC / Keck enter institutions. Pre-doctoral students are expected to enroll either in a natural sciences program and take additional computer-oriented / informatics coursework, or in a computer,  computational science, or informatics program and take additional courses in biological science. These additional course requirements will be discussed individually in meetings with the NLM Training Program Steering Committee to develop a customized curriculum for the trainee.

Applicants must be in possession of their PhD when they apply for a postdoctoral fellowship.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Interested applicants are required to speak with  the Keck Center's  Training Director at the applicant’s home institution for further advice before beginning the application process to make sure that your proposed project is appropriate for the NLM Training Program.

  • Complete and submit the on-line Graduate Application form.

  • CV: Email to glueck@rice.edu a current resume (CV) outlining your professional work experience and academic history.

  • Statement: Email to  glueck@rice.edu  a brief statement (one page long, double spaced) explaining the relationship of the proposed project to possible future applications in translational biomedicine/biomedical informatics. This statement is to be written by the applicant only. It is an overview version of your project, versus the project description in your applciation, which should include the specific steps you will take in your project.

  • Ask for 2 Letters of Recommendation from people other than your mentors. The recommendors should email them directly to glueck@rice.edu; these recommendations are not required to be on letterhead. These may be former professors, employers, etc.

  • Transcripts: official copies are preferred, but unofficial copies will be accepted. If the transcript is in a foreign language, you must submit an English translation. This is also required of postdoctoral applicants: transcripts of all degrees; there must be proof of the official receipt of your doctoral degree. Email glueck@rice.edu the following as PDFs:
    • Undergraduate transcripts from all institutions you attended
    • Master's degree transcript (if you have a Master's)
    • Current institution's transcript, where you are a predoc
    • If you do not have access to a scanner, mail the transcripts to the address below.

  • Proof of US citizenship (birth certificate or passport) or Permanent Residency ("Green Card"): email a clear PDF scan to glueck@rice.edu or mail a clear photocopy to the address above. You must already have your Green Card to be eligible to apply.

  • Each mentor must submit an on-line Mentor Recommendation form.

Applications are reviewed by the  NLM Training Program Steering Team.  Selected applicants are invited to interview with the Steering Team.  Applicants selected for an interview will be notified via email.  Interviews are generally held within one month of the application deadline.  Interviews include a brief presentation of the research project, planned coursework, and mentoring plan.  Mentors are expected to participate in the interview with the trainees.

Please review the above requirements and the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page (link) carefully before contacting me at glueck@rice.edu.
