My aim is to understand how phenotypic variation is generated and how it influences the course of evolution. To answer these questions I am employing a variety of approaches from developmental biology, genetics, comparative analysis, computational biology and mathematical modelling. As an experimental system I use the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans and other closely related species. I am particularly interested in how cell lineage variability evolves in different groups of animals.

My research interests are at the interface of evolution, ecology and behavior. One of the major problems in evolutionary biology concerns the evolution of social groups. My research is in several areas involving the evolution of social behavior including the behavioral and genetic prerequisites for group living and the functional consequences of living in groups. The organisms that I use for studies of social behavior are the social insects, particularly the ants. Ants provide thousands of social species, many of which can be kept under controlled laboratory conditions, and manipulated to answer questions about social behavior.

My research interests center on understanding processes underlying adaptive evolution. Using tractable experimental systems I aim to identify and integrate these mechanisms at genotypic and phenotypic levels, and examine how they depend on genetic and environmental factors.

My current research interests revolve around elucidation of the intrinsic and external forces that shape the evolution of complex traits, focusing primarily on the evolution of morphology in holometabolous insects. During my graduate work, I studied the evolution of life histories and the evolution and maintenance of polyphenisms.
