Guidelines

The University provides the Rice community (faculty, staff & students) and Rice contractors with on-campus parking facilities for use while the purpose of conducting University business or attending University events; Rice contractors and Rice community members and their guests are expected to park in these provided on-campus facilities and not on neighborhood streets and are required to register vehicles prior to parking any vehicle on campus, or else to park in available on-campus paid visitor lots. Registered vehicles must display valid contractractor temporary parking hangtags or current Rice student/employee parking permits.  These permits must be permanently affixed to the rear window or bumper (exterior surface, driver's side) of the vehicle.  In addition, each registered driver will receive a proximity card (proxy card) allowing access to appropriate lots.  The proxy card is to be used by the person to whom it is issued and is not to be "passed back" to another driver to allow illegal access to the lot.  (For more information on proxy cards click here).  Each registered vehicle must have current state inspection and registration stickers, or the right to park at Rice will be rescinded until brought current.

Faculty and staff who park in the garage and premium lots have access to Hess Lot when using the gym, and are allowed to park in the Greenbriar Annex Lot when doing business in 5620 Greenbriar.  They also have a back up lot (APB Lot) for times when they find their lot full, undergoing major maintenance, or commandeered for special university events.  Commuter lot decal holders may use the Greenbriar Lot when their lots are full or otherwise unavailable.

Faculty, staff, and students who have paid for contract parking may also use the North Lot (after 4pm), and the section of Lovett Lot behind Allen Center (after 5:30pm) on weedays, on weekends and on university holidays.

Faculty, staff and married students may register two personally owned vehicles for convenience of use; however, only one vehicle may be parked on campus at one time in the assigned lot.  The second vehicle may be parked in paid visitor lots and in the Greenbriar Lot.  With the exception of the spouse/partner option, faculty, staff and students contract for only one vehicle parking on campus at any one time.

Illegal parking may be cited by RUPD at any time.

On the web registration form, if the lot you want to choose has an asterick (*) then:

  • You may only select that lot if you are already permitted to park there.
  • If you are not already permitted to park there, then you may put yourself on the waiting list.
