Undergraduates in the Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology may elect a B.A. in Biochemistry & Cell Biology, a B.A. in Biological Sciences, or a B.S. in Biochemistry & Cell Biology. In addition to the degree requirements for each of these majors, there are numerous research opportunities and internships available to our students. Freshman can elect to participate in a Freshman Seminar in Local Biology (Bios 115) as an introduction to undergraduate research at Rice.
The undergraduate curriculum in the Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology and the Department includes courses in biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, developmental biology, endocrinology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neurobiology, plant biology, and structural biology. Laboratory experience can be achieved through research for credit or through a selection of Bioscience Lab Courses. Biochemistry majors are assigned an advisor from the Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, and students remain paired with the same advisor throughout their undergraduate study.
Undergraduates can earn course credit for research by enrolling in Independent Study for Undergraduates (Bios 310) or Senior Honors Research (Bios 400). All Rice undergraduates who are currently conducting or have conducted independent or group research are eligible to participate in the Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium. In their senior year, students are eligible for the following awards conferred by the Department of Biochemistry:
Frederick B. Rudolph Award for Outstanding BCB Seniors
George J. Schroepfer, Jr. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in BCB
James B. Walker Award for Outstanding Seniors in BCB
